Layering, Colour Relationships and Form

  1. These are older paintings that explore subtlties in communication and assumptions. Diptych and Luminesce use a tulip-like motif that I like to use from time to time. It is a dynamic form that I position this way and that, using a stencil technique, to achieve a variety of results. In each painting the tulip shape is obscured by textured layers or rendered in an incomplete way. As these paintings took shape I was questioning my own perception of reality in the moment. Diptych was created shortly after 9/11 and Luminesce in the following year.

Speak Listen is all about the relationship between speaking and listening. It uses an image of Antarctica - the southern pole - as if to say that speaking and listening are as separate as the poles themselves. Truly they are aspects of the same thing - not so very different and yet paradoxically opposite.
